Another two records - in windy conditions

    David Lilley

I chalked up records number 17 and 18 at the Double Fita Star at a wet and windy Ampthill this weekend.

I scored 2279 for the two days made up of 1127 and 1152 (my best Fita in five years). On the second day, in a fresh crosswind, I scored 267 for a new UK record for 90m distance. That was unexpected given the conditions. I got very near it with 261 on the first day but the following day was a bit windier. It was ridiculous really that I managed it. After two dozen I knew I had a sniff at it but a lousy fifth end meant I had to score 48 for a new record - not easy at at the best of times. I scored 49 with the wind blowing quite hard so I was pretty happy with that!

However it has made me think of altering how I practice. I hardly ever shoot at the maximum distance and I rarely do badly at it. Maybe I should apply this to other distances as well and shoot non-standard ones like 60m and 40y/40m instead. Then I have no expectations of what to get. I always improve in the winter when I shoot alot less so I will think about this.

I also came close to the 30m distance record when it was at its windiest on day two. Only a poor last dozen stopped me there. I think that if conditions had been good I would have busted 1200. One day we'll have decent weather at a Fita Star tournament.
