    Hat-trick of UK titles achieved

    David Lilley

I've done it again - for the third straight year !

I'm quite pleased about this one as it is my best perfomance at the Championships yet. On the first day, I shot as well as the awful wet and windy conditions would allow. Thankfully the rain was behind us and not in our faces unlike at Ampthill three weeks ago. I had a good first afternoon scoring 542 for the Long National part of the York round of 961 - I missed with the very first arrow ! On the second day, after an alarm with a taxi firm that made me arrive late past the scheduled time for sighters - I got away with it as there was a delay on the field which was very lucky - in more awkward conditions where there was a moderate crosswind, I had a really good start at 100 yards and was shooting at Bowman standard until the last 18 arrows at the distance when I collapsed dramatically managing a disastrous 88 points for those 18. This continued until the last 18 arrows at 80 yards when I got back to Bowman standard again. At 60 yards there were some sloppy arrows until the last end. I ended with a score of 958 for two day total of 1919.

I fell apart during this round after I realised I could get the UK record. My concentration went and that was that. I have learnt two things from this. First I must concentrate on shot execution and not anything else at all. Second, if I can do this then the Double York UK record will go even in the usual Lilleshall conditions which are rarely any good. I've done eight shooting days there since 2003 and only one day has had good shooting conditions. The rest of the time it has been windy and sometimes with rain too.

My main conclusion is that I must really work on my mental game in order to get higher scores. This will now be the main area for improvement over the winter. I am really up for busting a UK record at the UK Championships next year.
