First UK title amid heat and lightning

    David Lilley

    YYYYEEEEESSSSS!!!!!

I got my first UK title at Lilleshall National Sports Centre. On the first day in sweltering conditions I scored a disappointing 974(34) for the York. I was about 50 down at the 100 yards distance scoring only 426(2 misses) although the moderate tailwind made life awkward at times. In the afternoon I shot really well at 80 yards scoring 362 and then a mediocre 186 at 60 yards. On the second day, it was a cool and misty start but it wasn't long before the heavy rain and thunderstorms arrived. We only did 4 dozen at 100 yards before lunch. Then we were told the York round would be replaced by a New Western. After a spectacular deluge over the lunch break, it was decided to have a vote on whether to carry on. Then the weather had it's say with some pyrotechnics which unfortunately swung the vote in favour of those who wanted an early stop. I was in the minority as I thought the storms would soon pass. I turned out to be right.

I was the only champion not to receive a trophy as the 2002 champion did not bother to return it. I got a gold medal though. I'll just have to wait for the sizeable Barnett Cup. I had two photos taken, one with an identical looking trophy, so the photos will arrive soon.

When I got home, I found that two of my UK records have been ratified leaving only the Double Fita 900 record outstanding. It's strange though that the Single Fita 900 record done on the same day has been ratified.
